What’s the profile of a modern, best-in-class content marketer? By modern I mean someone who is using new tools and resources (social media, video and data) in concert with traditional marketing programmes. And by best in class I mean someone who is driving real results.

Great content marketers have a documented strategy and follow it closely 
Just 35 percent of content marketers actually have a documented strategy (48 percent say they have one, but it’s not documented), according to studies. Sixty percent of those who have a documented strategy rate themselves as being effective content marketers, vs. just 7 percent of those who have no strategy, written or otherwise.
Define a content marketing strategy for yourself, record it and refer back to it frequently. Don’t leave it on a metaphorical shelf gathering dust. Start by answering some basic questions about your company and your audience: Who do you want to reach? What value can you provide? How are you going to deliver that information? Who is going to manage the process? How will you measure success and refine your efforts?
Great marketers have a dedicated content team 
Fewer than half of marketers have a dedicated content marketing group. But 69 percent of those who are most effective at content are likely to have a structured group. (These structures may vary. Some companies have a content marketing team that functions independently; in other cases, marketing team members are assigned responsibility for content functions horizontally across a company’s departments.)Empower a dedicated team (or, in the case of smaller companies, a key person) that’s responsible and accountable for the success of your content marketing program.Great marketers use an array of tactics and social media platformsThe best modern marketers don’t rely on just one or two approaches to reach and engage their audiences. In fact, the most effective ones use an average of 14 tactics and seven social media platforms.

Tactics for B2B marketers include in-person events, webinars or webcasts, videos, blogs, case studies, white papers or e-books, research reports, e-newsletters and microsites. Great content marketers publish regularly

The most effective content marketers publish new content daily, or at least several times per week.

Create an editorial calendar with at least three months (or, ideally, six months) mapped out. Having a plan for what you are going to publish and when you are going to publish it makes it far more likely you’ll actually do so.

Great content marketers spend more on content

This is a big duh: More budget equals more effective marketing. The most effective marketers allocate, on average, 37 percent of their marketing budgets to content programs.

I suppose it’s an easy directive for me to give: Find more money! At the very least, consider allocating some percentage of your 2015 budget to a pilot content program (if you don’t already have one).

Great content marketers iterate and experiment

The more effective content marketers are always scheming to uncover new ideas and processes and to improve and refine what they are already doing. The most successful ones work on more than a dozen initiatives at any one time—including creating better quality content, improving conversion rates and overall content effectiveness, creating more visual content, reimagining or repurposing content, measuring ROI and becoming better storytellers.

The good news is that the least effective content marketers are ambitious: They plan to work on more initiatives in 2015 than their already-competent peers—an average of nine, vs. six.

Choose a few things to improve in 2015. In marketing (and, I suppose, in life), the smallest changes can yield big results.

But how do the search engines know what we should rank for? The title tag is one important aspect of this, but another is the anchor text.

What Are Anchor Text Backlinks

Anchor text is the words we use to link to another page. Anchor text backlinks would thus be links on other websites that use keywords when linking back to us. Let me give you an example. Let’s say I want to rank for the keyword “best blue widgets”. I would start by including my keyword in the title of my webpage and of course use it throughout the content as well. I would then go out and build links back to my site (through article marketing for example) that include “best blue widgets” in the anchor text of those links.

Using Keyword Rich Anchor Backlinks To Boost Your Search Engine Rankings

We already established that the right anchor text in our backlinks can help us rank well in the search engines. Let’s build a whole SEO strategy around this concept.

Start With Your Keywords – Do a little keyword research to find out exactly what words people are typing into the search engines to get the type of information or product you have to offer. Next take a look at how hard it will be to rank well for each term. Strike a balance between search volume and how much work it will take to get on page one of Google for your keywords.

On Page Optimization – Next it’s time to create new content around the keyword. Use it in the title of your page and throughout the content. This is referred to as “on page optimization”. If you are including headings or images, try to work your keyword in there as well if possible. Keep in mind through that you still want your content to read well and avoid “keyword stuffing”.

Link Building – Last but not least it’s time to build some keyword rich backlinks. Start with some internal linking. This means that you want to link from other pages on your site back to this new content using your keyword as the anchor text.

Next go out and build some links on other websites that point back to your site. You can do this via social bookmarking, social media, article marketing, and guest blogging for example. Again, be sure to include your keyword as part of the anchor text in your backlinks.

Iíve been using the term ìanchor text linkî quite a bit recently. Since not everyone is familiar with what it means and exactly how it comes into play with search engine optimization, I thought Iíd take a few minutes to explain.

Anchor text is the words you use to link to another page.

Let me give you an example. Letís say I want to link to another page on this blog, my post about fast seo rankings for example.

The url of that page is http://www.affiliatetreasurechest.com/139/fast-seo-rankings-an-example

The html code for linking from one page to another looks like this:

It will look on the page like this ñ fast seo rankings

In this example ìfast seo rankingsî is the anchor text.

About 90% of SEO comes down to two things:

1. Your Title Tag ñ Which is the title of your page or post
2. Links and the text you use to link to the page or post

What does this mean for you? When you are trying to get your posts, page or article to rank for a particular keyword or key phrase, spent some time working on incoming links and use your keywords or variations of it in the text that links to your page.

How many links you need to rank well depends on your comptetition. Google your key phrase and look at the results on the first page of google. Do they have the keyphrase in the title tag? (The title tag will be displayed as the blue link at the top of the search result).

Is the key phrase in the description? Google makes it easy to see this at a glance by highlighting your search term anywhere it is used.

If you donít see your exact key phrase much on the results page, it may be rather easy to rank for that term.

Next look at each of the pages that rank on page one of google. Not the page rank of that page.

I also like to take a look at the links that point to that page. Go to yahoo.com and enter ìsite:î followed by the link to the page you want to look at and click on Web Search.

This will take you to the yahoo site explorer. I explained how to do this in detail in my web content challenge post. Scroll down to the ìIncoming Linksî section.

Look at ìInLinksî and choose ìExcept from this domainî. This will show you how many incoming links your competitor has pointing to that page. To outrank him, youíll need at least that many links, probably quite a few more depending on how strong and old the site is that the page is on.

Time To Take Some Action

Go to your website right now and pick one page. Make sure you know what you want to rank for and that your title has your key phrase in it.

Take a look at your competition and determine how many links youíll need to rank for this key phrase. I suggest you pick something that will be rather easy to rank for.

Then go out and build a few links to that pge. Write some articles, be a guest blogger on a few related blogs etc.

Think of the internet as one big democracy where we vote with links. Backlinks are all the various links where other web pages link to us. The more links we get, and the higher quality the pages those links are coming from are, the higher we will rank in the search engines for our keywords. But how do the search engines know what we should rank for? The title tag is one important aspect of this, but another is the anchor text.

What Are Anchor Text Backlinks

Anchor text is the words we use to link to another page. Anchor text backlinks would thus be links on other websites that use keywords when linking back to us. Let me give you an example. Let’s say I want to rank for the keyword “best blue widgets”. I would start by including my keyword in the title of my webpage and of course use it throughout the content as well. I would then go out and build links back to my site (through article marketing for example) that include “best blue widgets” in the anchor text of those links.

Using Keyword Rich Anchor Backlinks To Boost Your Search Engine Rankings

We already established that the right anchor text in our backlinks can help us rank well in the search engines. Let’s build a whole SEO strategy around this concept.

Start With Your Keywords – Do a little keyword research to find out exactly what words people are typing into the search engines to get the type of information or product you have to offer. Next take a look at how hard it will be to rank well for each term. Strike a balance between search volume and how much work it will take to get on page one of Google for your keywords.

On Page Optimization – Next it’s time to create new content around the keyword. Use it in the title of your page and throughout the content. This is referred to as “on page optimization”. If you are including headings or images, try to work your keyword in there as well if possible. Keep in mind through that you still want your content to read well and avoid “keyword stuffing”.

Link Building – Last but not least it’s time to build some keyword rich backlinks. Start with some internal linking. This means that you want to link from other pages on your site back to this new content using your keyword as the anchor text.

Next go out and build some links on other websites that point back to your site. You can do this via social bookmarking, social media, article marketing, and guest blogging for example. Again, be sure to include your keyword as part of the anchor text in your backlinks.

Iíve been using the term ìanchor text linkî quite a bit recently. Since not everyone is familiar with what it means and exactly how it comes into play with search engine optimization, I thought Iíd take a few minutes to explain.

Anchor text is the words you use to link to another page.

Let me give you an example. Letís say I want to link to another page on this blog, my post about fast seo rankings for example.

The url of that page is http://www.affiliatetreasurechest.com/139/fast-seo-rankings-an-example

The html code for linking from one page to another looks like this:

It will look on the page like this ñ fast seo rankings

In this example ìfast seo rankingsî is the anchor text.

About 90% of SEO comes down to two things:

1. Your Title Tag ñ Which is the title of your page or post
2. Links and the text you use to link to the page or post

What does this mean for you? When you are trying to get your posts, page or article to rank for a particular keyword or key phrase, spent some time working on incoming links and use your keywords or variations of it in the text that links to your page.

How many links you need to rank well depends on your comptetition. Google your key phrase and look at the results on the first page of google. Do they have the keyphrase in the title tag? (The title tag will be displayed as the blue link at the top of the search result).

Is the key phrase in the description? Google makes it easy to see this at a glance by highlighting your search term anywhere it is used.

If you donít see your exact key phrase much on the results page, it may be rather easy to rank for that term.

Next look at each of the pages that rank on page one of google. Not the page rank of that page.

I also like to take a look at the links that point to that page. Go to yahoo.com and enter ìsite:î followed by the link to the page you want to look at and click on Web Search.

This will take you to the yahoo site explorer. I explained how to do this in detail in my web content challenge post. Scroll down to the ìIncoming Linksî section.

Look at ìInLinksî and choose ìExcept from this domainî. This will show you how many incoming links your competitor has pointing to that page. To outrank him, youíll need at least that many links, probably quite a few more depending on how strong and old the site is that the page is on.

Time To Take Some Action

Go to your website right now and pick one page. Make sure you know what you want to rank for and that your title has your key phrase in it.

Take a look at your competition and determine how many links youíll need to rank for this key phrase. I suggest you pick something that will be rather easy to rank for.

Then go out and build a few links to that pge. Write some articles, be a guest blogger on a few related blogs etc.
